The Home Jobs You’ll Be Glad You Did Before Winter

Because November is a terrible time to discover your front door has a personality.

Autumn has arrived. 🍂

The heating starts creeping back on, evenings get darker and suddenly those little jobs around the house become much more noticeable.

That slightly draughty window.
The front door that needs a firm shove.
The conservatory you quietly abandon every winter.
The garage door making noises it definitely didn’t make last year.

September is a very good time to deal with them — before British winter weather gets involved.

1. Check Your Windows

Stand near your windows on a cooler day.

Can you feel a draught? Are they difficult to open or close? Is there condensation between the panes?

Sometimes a repair is enough. Older or poorly performing windows, however, may benefit from replacement with modern energy-efficient double glazing.

At NatCon, we supply and install PVCu, aluminium and timber replacement windows across Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

2. Give the Front Door the Once-Over

Your front door has several jobs: keeping your home warm, secure and looking good.

If yours is draughty, difficult to lock, warped or simply past its best, autumn is an ideal time to consider replacing it.

Modern composite front doors, PVCu doors and aluminium entrance doors offer a huge choice of styles alongside improved security and thermal performance.

And yes — a new front door can completely change the face of a house.

3. Don't Abandon the Conservatory Until Spring

If your conservatory becomes the world's most expensive coat-storage facility every winter, something needs to change.

Replacing an older glazed or polycarbonate roof with a lightweight solid conservatory roof can help create a room that's far more comfortable throughout the year.

More living space without moving house?

Now we're talking.

4. Listen to Your Garage Door

Rattling. Sticking. Heavy to operate.

Garage doors are very good at giving hints before they become a problem.

NatCon supplies and installs Novoferm garage doors, including insulated and automated options, across Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

Because standing outside wrestling with a garage door on a freezing January morning is nobody's idea of fun.

5. Don't Wait for Winter to Make the Decision for You

Small niggles are easy to ignore when it's warm.

Then winter arrives.

If your windows, doors, conservatory roof or garage door are already showing their age, autumn is a sensible time to get them checked.

You may need a repair.

You may need a replacement.

Either way, we'd rather give you straightforward advice than sell you something you don't need.

Is Your Home Ready for Autumn? 7 Things to Check Before the Colder Weather Arrives

There’s always that moment in September when you realise summer is quietly packing its bags.
The mornings feel cooler, the evenings are drawing in and someone inevitably asks, “Is it cold in here, or is it just me?” 🍂
Before surrendering and turning the heating back on, it’s worth giving your home a quick autumn check.
Windows, doors and conservatories can start showing little warning signs as temperatures change — and spotting them now could save you hassle when winter properly arrives.

Here are seven things worth checking before the colder weather sets in.

1. Can you feel a draught around your windows?

Stand near your windows on a cooler or breezier day. Can you feel cold air around the frame?
A draught doesn't automatically mean you need new windows. Worn seals, hinges or something needing adjustment could be responsible. Older windows, however, may simply no longer be performing as well as they once did.

Why are my windows draughty?
Common causes include worn seals, gaps around the frame, problems with hinges or locks, or ageing windows.
And no, putting a cushion against the windowsill isn't technically a long-term repair. 😉

2. Is there condensation between the panes?

Condensation on the inside surface of a window isn't necessarily a fault. Cooking, showering and drying clothes indoors all increase moisture levels.
But misting trapped between the panes of double glazing is different.

Why is my double glazing misted inside?
Misting between the panes usually indicates that the sealed glass unit has failed and moisture has entered the space between the glass.

The good news? Depending on the condition of the window, it may be possible to replace the glass unit rather than the entire window.
That's why it's worth getting advice before assuming everything needs replacing.

3. Are your windows difficult to open or close?

Windows shouldn't require a wrestling match. 😂

Stiff handles, windows catching against the frame or locks that are becoming difficult to operate are all worth investigating.
Sometimes an adjustment or repair is enough. With older windows, recurring problems may indicate that replacement is becoming the better long-term option.

Either way, September is a considerably nicer time to discover the problem than a freezing Sunday evening in January.

4. Give your doors the autumn test.

Your front and back doors deserve some attention too.

Check that they close securely, locks and handles operate smoothly and there aren't noticeable draughts around the edges.
A good entrance door isn't just about kerb appeal. Security, thermal performance, weather resistance and correct installation all matter.
If your existing door is starting to show its age, autumn is a good time to explore your options before harsher weather arrives.

5. Is your conservatory starting to feel cooler?

This is often when homeowners begin noticing the difference.

A conservatory that's lovely during summer can gradually become the room nobody wants to use as outside temperatures fall.
Why does my conservatory get so cold in winter?
Older glazing and conservatory roof systems can contribute to significant temperature changes throughout the year.
Depending on the existing structure, replacing an older roof with a lightweight insulated solid conservatory roof can help create a more comfortable space that can be enjoyed for more of the year.

Your conservatory doesn't necessarily have to go into hibernation. 🐻🏡

6. Take ten minutes outside

Before the rain really gets going, walk around your property and look at the outside of your windows, doors and conservatory.
Look for obvious deterioration, damaged sealant or anything else that doesn't look quite right. It's also a sensible time to check gutters and drainage areas around your home and clear away autumn debris where necessary.

Ten minutes on a pleasant September afternoon beats investigating a problem sideways in the rain in November. ☔

7. Repair or replace?

This is the question we're often asked.

How do I know if my windows need replacing?

There isn't one answer for every home.
If the frames are generally in good condition, problems with hardware, seals or glass units may sometimes be repairable.
If your windows are older, damaged, repeatedly causing problems or no longer providing the comfort, security or performance you need, replacement may make better long-term sense.

At NatCon Windows, we'd rather help you understand what's actually needed than automatically tell you everything needs replacing.

Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.
Funny way to sell windows, perhaps — but we'd rather give you the right answer. 😉

Is autumn a good time to replace windows and doors?

Yes. Autumn can be an ideal time to address window and door problems before the coldest weather arrives.

If you've already noticed draughts, failed glazing, troublesome locks or rooms becoming harder to keep comfortable, dealing with them now means your home can be better prepared for winter.
It also means you don't have to wait until the first freezing week of the year — when everyone suddenly remembers their windows at precisely the same time.
